Why Do We Give, Donate and Sponsor Projects
A
good many of us in the world live with plenty, and all that happens is
when our children are hungry they go into the kitchen, and rumage through
the fridge or cupboards and find food.
On the other side their are families in many rural areas of Kenya that suffer extreme hardship because of droughts. Can you imagine how you would feel if your family were suffering because of drought?
Kenya lies on the equator and as such the weather is very suitable while the soil is fertile and its people are hardworking but the challenge lies in that the rains are inconsistent and without water crops won't grow.
The world today is facing greater need for food mainly because of the increasing population. With the shortage of food, food prices continue to rise. This may not be much of a problem in the developed world but poses much of a problem to the families in Africa where wages are small.
Here in Mombasa, we live only a five minute walking distance from a huge supermarket. A case in point is that for the previous one month sugar has been absent from the shelves yet Kenya is a sugar producing country. The problem as explained by the UN has been that crop produced has only been 25% of the previous annual harvest.
If we ourselves have no sugar in our cupboards is that really a problem for us? ...but imagine having hardly any food, and your annual harvest of maize and beans you have grown has finished ...and you have starving children?
How would you feel about people in more developed and well off countries that have plenty and just maybe could give something small to help? This would hopefully create greater self-sufficiency through growing crops by irrigation using water from water wells they are then able to grow their own crops without irrigation problems, and feed their families all-year.
Kenya
has excellent climate for growing with good soil in most places, but they
need water and there are very few streams.
Most of the water flows underground. There is plenty of water in the earth's crust in form of underground streams. At some points the water table is shallow whereas at others the water table is very deep. In most parts of Kenya's dry regions digging to the 30 feet depths gets to some water that can be bucketed manually, by a winch or pumped. However to secure the water well, the well is bricked and cemented during construction so that safety of the workers and thereafter of users of the well may be ensured.
Unlike at the coast especially around Mombasa where well water is salty, wells constructed in the rural areas upcountry where the water is needed most fortunately have pure and tasty drinking water that is equally good for the livestock and for crop irrigation.
There are very many projects that have been started in many different parts of the world to meet a particular need in the communities. The projects have been the initiative of non-govermental organizations and other well wishers who come to the rescue of these communities. A question that is always ringing in my mind is that of the reason behind donors offering help to these rural communities. What is usually the main driving force making sponsors give so generously?
I have tried to look at the various motives behind the unselfish giving and I came up with the following reasons for giving. There some donors who want to help in funding projects out of having an amiable and generous heart to help. There are organizations which have become great donors to big projects that they have embarked on due to the touching needs of the affected community. They do not just feel right to sit back in their ever flowing profits while there are areas out there where lives are on the blink of dying if something urgent is not done. And this is what makes them come on board and give selflessly in an effort of helping the vulnerable in society. These donors are moved by a deep and sincere purpose to help those in need in order to ensure that, the affected people can enjoy better quality of life.
There
are donors who give selflessly to water well projects intent on helping
those with problems and have even gone out there to discover those places
in dire need of a helping hand. They have further helped the communities
with the most crucial needs at the time. Such are the donors whose reasons
for giving are derived from the pursuit to attain the satisfaction at
heart. They are very content in seeing lives change from their help and
though not many might discover it, they will not bother with recognition
as long as the society affected is benefitting from the project.
Other reasons why people are ready to donate is to give back to the society due to the good relation they might have had with the local communities. The only way of reaching to every member of that community is always to find a good project that will help or improve their lives. Others have become donors as a way of meeting their mission goals.
Giving to people in need involves taking part in some worthy projects like starting projects which will help a whole community, and water wells assists everyone in the local community.
